“RAD” – group show, running for the entire month of January 2013, is a collaborative effort by Kansas City artists curated by Luis Garcia and Maria Vasquez Boyd, visually interpreting Oaxaca’s Noche de Robanos/Night of the Radishes.
The festival is celebrated every year on December 23 in Oaxaca Mexico and consists of an exhibition of sculptures made from large red radishes weighing up to 6 pounds. Themes include nativity scenes, party scenes, dancers, saint, etc.
The challenge for artists- produce work in 5 days at the 2009 Gallery space, prior to the First Friday in December. Using a monochromatic palette with the main color close to that of radishes, artists created work with tools of the trade; brushes, sticks, sponges, stencils, spray paint, etc. Inspired by the imagery from the festival, artists interpreted their ideas into drawings and paintings.
Five-9 foot photo paper rolls were donated by David Shaughnessy Photography and canvas/paint donated by Spyn Gallery.
