What i slayed last night while Rakim spit

// March 7th, 2013 // No Comments » // Art Shows

Live painting has always been a savage affair which suits my temperament just fine, last night was no different. I am lucky to get any room to do my thing at all. So i posted up in the only seat in the house, with a half glimpse of the stage and started to sketch in preparation for the one and only “god MC” Rakim. I was practically spazzin to do this!

This is the result of my night listening to one of the best to ever touch the mic. Decided to go with immediacy and travel light, using watercolors and watercolor paper for the first time ever in a live painting event, then did line work with paint markers with brush tips. Overall piece is 15″x20″ on 240lb paper. My goal was to capture Rakim’s essence and overall emotive qualities and not so much an exact portrait.

I’ve gotten several requests for a copy of this, please drop me a message and tell me if you want one!

So very excited to be live painting tonight for RAKIM at the Riot Room. As far as I know this is the first time he’s come thru Kansas City.

This is the sample quick sketch i did last week in preparation for this event. Tonight i will slay it for real… spazzin hardcore!

First Annual RAD (Radish) Group Show @2009 Gallery

“RAD” – group show, running for the entire month of January 2013, is a collaborative effort by Kansas City artists curated by Luis Garcia and Maria Vasquez Boyd, visually interpreting Oaxaca’s Noche de Robanos/Night of the Radishes.

The festival is celebrated every year on December 23 in Oaxaca Mexico and consists of an exhibition of sculptures made from large red radishes weighing up to 6 pounds. Themes include nativity scenes, party scenes, dancers, saint, etc.

The challenge for artists- produce work in 5 days at the 2009 Gallery space, prior to the First Friday in December. Using a monochromatic palette with the main color close to that of radishes, artists created work with tools of the trade; brushes, sticks, sponges, stencils, spray paint, etc. Inspired by the imagery from the festival, artists interpreted their ideas into drawings and paintings.

Five-9 foot photo paper rolls were donated by David Shaughnessy Photography and canvas/paint donated by Spyn Gallery.

Artists:
Maria Vasquez Boyd
Luis J Garcia
Jose Faus
Robert Tapley Bustamante
Israel Alejandro Garcia Garcia
